Sculptural elements...

I ;love the sculptural elements of theses head pieces by milliner Sarah Cant. The shapes and forms are really interesting and tie in with the the sculptural element influencing the neckpiece I am making at the minute...

History repeats itself...

Another element of art history springs to mind when I Look at these charming hand printed wallpapers by Lizzie Allen. My study of Toiles de jouy and Art Deco textiles brought to light how national events and popular goings on were depicted through motifs on fabrics at the time, not dissimilar to Lizzies wallpaper motifs...

The art history element of the course is really interesting me (despite finding it a tough slog I'm not gonna lie!), I'm loving understanding why things look the way they do/ did and how it happened in a certain way. I can see myself using art history referenced within my own work in the future.

Art deco similarities...

I've spent the day mulling through art history and in particular at the Art Deco period, I've just found these tea towel designs by Lindsey Lang ; the patterns and colours remind me of some of the art deco textiles that I came across today!

Colour palette inspiration...

After talking about personalised colour palettes and how I'm still a little scared of colour only yesterday, I just had to reblog this post I found on http://printpattern.blogspot.co.uk.
The colours are simply gorgeous, I love the fact that they are bright yet still sophisticated and not too garish. Some of the actual patterns however I'm not as keen on (further down the line byAngela Walters and Jeni Baker) I don't find the graphic repetition of the prints interesting enough but I really do like the collection by Chic Flora as despite being quite graphic, they still retain a delicacy (it could be the florals!) Definitely a flash of colour palette inspiration...

Here are some more upcoming fabrics due for release this spring at Art Gallery Fabrics. February saw the arrival of Chic Flora an in-house designed collection of  lush florals in mineral blue, coral, and lime.

Below: Next month will see the release of Pat Bravo's 'Essentials'collection.

Below : Also arriving in March is 'Drift' by Angela Walters, inspired by a tropical island paradise.

And finally (below) April  will see the arrival of Dreamin Vintage by Jeni Baker.

The Work of a textile genius...

Karen Nicol is probably my ultimate textile artist icon, her work is full of context and technique that always produces beyond beautiful results.
This
collection is called Singerie, the French word for 'monkey trick.' Singerie is a genre that was first found in the eighteenth dynasty of Egypt and made hugely popular in 18th Century French Rococo art, in which artists satirically depicted monkeys wearing fashionable dress. Karen similarly delights in the irony of clothing her animals in couture skins, in response to humans dressing themselves in animal pelts. In doing so, Karen pushes embellishment beyond the realms of couture into art.

Not only is her work made beautiful through her skill, but the concept she uses is enduring and clever too. I love how she is here referencing to art history and how in general she is passionate about textiles being recognised as an appreciated art form.

Inspired by Ironwork...

The shapes and complex repeat patterns in this ironwork really captured my imagination. I love the designs and can imagine them printed and even picture them as cut work on textile items. I'm thinking of using this as inspiration for the second half of my current module, watch this space ;)

Initial 3d drawings...

Here's a couple of my initial 3D drawings based on my own images of natural objects with man made objects and a witch hazel tree. I'm really pleased with my witch hazel drawing, I used acetate and to print my image on then I worked cut up pieces of further acetate on top to create texture. I also really adore the colours of this too..

Nature Vs Necessity...

I've been out and about searching for inspiration for my current module. With a brief of flowers and foliage, I have decided to bring in an element of juxtaposition. I find the idea of natural objects set against man made things in their natural habitats really intriguing, here is a selection of my own photos to show you what I mean. The shapes of different foliage i.e berries and interesting trees is also grabbing my attention too :)...
